Summary

Johan is a cold and calculating killer with a mysterious past, and brilliant Dr。 Kenzo Tenma is the only one who can stop him! Conspiracy and serial murder open the door to a compelling, intricately woven plot in this masterwork of suspense。

Once upon a time, a monster in disguise lived in a peaceful little town in a peaceful little valley。 The monster cut all ties to evil and began helping the people of the town。 But one day, some devilish messengers came to visit。 The town was suddenly enveloped in a miasma of fear, and the people began to kill each other。 The messengers had come to the town with one goal in mind: to capture the monster named Franz Bonaparta!

How can a real person become nothing more than fiction? By eliminating everyone who has ever known them, everyone who has ever known of their past—by becoming the only one in the world who knows of their existence。

One man attempted to do this, trying to commit the perfect suicide。 But he failed to wipe out all traces of his former life, and in this failure, he became the nameless Monster。

The best psychological thriller manga of all times。 The depiction of human characters in this one is like reading a best seller novel with its complexities (even with lesser words, you can grasp every little thing)。 Monster has one of the best description of a psychopathic killer (who is also perfectly charismatic and manipulative) like no other。 He has this depth that you want to know more。 The way he was drawn in many of his scenes, gentle smile, soft eyes, the way he never speaks yet people A The best psychological thriller manga of all times。 The depiction of human characters in this one is like reading a best seller novel with its complexities (even with lesser words, you can grasp every little thing)。 Monster has one of the best description of a psychopathic killer (who is also perfectly charismatic and manipulative) like no other。 He has this depth that you want to know more。 The way he was drawn in many of his scenes, gentle smile, soft eyes, the way he never speaks yet people ALWAYS tell him everything。 The way he is always described as handsome (like head-turning handsome) but people never really remember his features/traits/characters speak volume of his (in)existence。 "I was here。 But I didn't exist" -Johan He'd be the perfect specimen for a psychologist, I can't help but enthralled by him。 Dr Tenma, just who cant fall in love with dr Tenma, who's kind to a fault? And so many other characters that you grow to love and understand that humans are just so many layers and multi-faceted。 I smiled, cried, and cried some more for these people。 This manga will give you experience like you'd never feel before, and even read in 2023, it's still as good as when I read it 15 years ago。 Timeless!Naoki Urasawa is one of the best mangaka in Japan, he has distinct art style incomparable to others, just a masterpiece。 。。。more

Hmmm what ? This is a bad ending。 I don't mind bad endings but it's still quite annoying。 And a lot of things didn't make sense。 I thought it would have a better ending。 Not as in a good ending but as in had more thoughts into it。 Also I knew that *he* would die cause of the cliché dialog but I'm still sad。Overall Monster gets a 4。25 Hmmm what ? I wasn’t sure how they would pull of the ending, but somehow they did it! The closure is fitting and beautifully done without ever feeling saccharine or phony。 It comes to an end, but do things ever really end? Truly harrowing last panel。 A genuinely fantastic series and a great way to finish out the year。

I feel like I’ve ran 83859 miles。 This was so fucking intense。 I know Keanu Reeves isn’t Japanese BUT I feel like he would play AN AMAZING Tenema。

The end of a very long road with these characters is here。 Well, we get a very interesting setting for the final volume。 Characters which have been built for many volumes, all the way back to 1 in many cases, come together。 There is a good level fo resolution of those characters and enough left open to leave us thinking and asking more questions。 As for the final confrontation, I can't think of a way in which I would have preferred it to go。 The chaos and randomness which happens, and the choice The end of a very long road with these characters is here。 Well, we get a very interesting setting for the final volume。 Characters which have been built for many volumes, all the way back to 1 in many cases, come together。 There is a good level fo resolution of those characters and enough left open to leave us thinking and asking more questions。 As for the final confrontation, I can't think of a way in which I would have preferred it to go。 The chaos and randomness which happens, and the choice Tenma has to make was unforeseen and welcomed。 All in all, this volume, along with volume 8 are all that I hoped they would be。 I both felt good about the ending, but also left wanting more - but knowing it is for the best not to have more。 This is unquestionable, tonally, and characterise, one of the best stories I have ever read。 I will revisit Monster again, after all, it has taken me several stop and starts to get to the point that I finish all the volumes in one sitting。 There is a lot more which I could, and probably will write about this story in the future - but like the story more generally, I will take my time and reflect。 。。。more

Series overall rating: 4 starsThe final showdown will take place in a town called Ruhenheim, where many characters' paths will converge, and many lives will be lost 。。。This was a tense, action-packed conclusion to the "Monster" series。I won't say much more about this final volume specifically, opting instead to dive into my review of the series as a whole。Let me start by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this series。 It didn't, as I had originally hoped, make it into my list of favourites (and I' Series overall rating: 4 starsThe final showdown will take place in a town called Ruhenheim, where many characters' paths will converge, and many lives will be lost 。。。This was a tense, action-packed conclusion to the "Monster" series。I won't say much more about this final volume specifically, opting instead to dive into my review of the series as a whole。Let me start by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this series。 It didn't, as I had originally hoped, make it into my list of favourites (and I'll get into some of the reasons for this in my review), but it was an exciting story with a host of memorable characters and a plot that consistently kept me curious。Spoiler warning: if you haven't finished this series, or at least made it to the final volume, there will be some spoilers here。 Read on at your own peril。PlotThe plot builds slowly, gradually revealing past events significant to its development。 The manga takes its time, painstakingly setting up many different situations and characters (some minor, some major), then, as the story moves along, it brings many of these elements together。As I mentioned in my short review of the very first volume, the beginning can feel a bit clichéd。 The fact that Tenma's the only surgeon with any skill at a large hospital, that he's being shamelessly used by the hospital director and his spoiled daughter, and that the moment he shows a shred of independence, he's stripped of all status and standing, is a bit simplistic。 However, this is only a set-up for the story to come, and you quickly forgive its simplicity。The continuing story, and particularly how Tenma is forced to go on the run, suspected of a crime he didn't commit, is fascinating and riveting。 His search for Johan, and for answers, brings him together with a multitude of other characters in a very clever way that keeps the story fresh and interesting。My only issue here is that I would have liked to see a little more of Tenma, and a little less of the supporting characters, as the story moved along。 Jumping from place to place and from character group to character group is perfectly fine in the first half of the story, but I wish more time had been spent on the more significant characters later on。There were also aspects of the ending with which I wasn't entirely happy。 (view spoiler)[I never felt that I got all the answers I wanted, and in particular it seemed that a lot of Johan's background, and why he became what he became, was left unexplained。 Why was his mind broken, when Anna was the one who witnessed the atrocities? Did they have some sort of psychological link, as twins sometimes do in these kinds of stories? Why was Johan dressed as a girl? I don't mind an open ending, and I did very much like the fact that Johan was left alive at the end, but there are certain questions that really should have been answered。 (hide spoiler)]CharactersThe characters are great。 All are given unique, colourful personalities, and it makes the manga that much more entertaining to read。I love Tenma。 He starts off as such a naive sweetheart and is rudely awakened to the grim realities of the world。 (view spoiler)[I did want to see some degree of moral deterioration in him, but I was disappointed in this。 I felt the manga built up his role and his purpose so thoroughly that it actually felt like a letdown that he never ended up killing anybody。 I know I'm weird here, but still。 This is actually a major reason this series hasn't been added to my favourites。 (hide spoiler)]Inspector Lunge is, of course, glorious。 His monomania and intelligence make him fascinating and formidable, both as foe and hero。 Also, his conviction that Tenma is guilty actually sows some interesting seeds of doubt that the reader has to deal with。Nina/Anna is well-rounded, heroic and interesting。Eva is irritating, but it's still cool to see a female character with such serious issues who isn't simply killed off or turned into an unequivocal villain。 I disliked her, but she was kind of fun to dislike。Dr。 Reichwein is adorable, and a lot more than one initially expects when introduced to him。 I ended up getting so invested in his survival that I was prepared to pitch a fit if something happened to him。 He's like a kindly old grandpa, but a fiercely loyal and tenacious one who can kick some serious ass when he wants to。And, of course, there's Grimmer。 I absolutely adore him, and I also think it's a great idea to include another Kinderheim survivor who hasn't turned into a monster, or who is, at the very least, doing his utmost to stay human。One of the things I love the most about Urasawa's characterisation is that he's constantly surprising you。 There are many characters you think you have pegged, and then they suddenly do something unexpected, or prove themselves to be a lot more than they initially seemed。 This is another way Urasawa keeps us on our toes。ArtThe artwork in this manga is absolutely fantastic。 If I could rate the art separately, it would get five stars, easy。The backgrounds are detailed and beautifully drawn, and the characters all have unique features, something that contributes to the brilliant and varied characterisation。My only (minor) criticism has to do with the translation: the translator has chosen not to translate the sound effects on the page, opting instead for a glossary at the back。 As understanding the sounds is frequently rather important in order to know what's going on, I was forced to flip back and forth between the glossary and the page I was reading, and since many of the pages don't even have page numbers, I frequently had to count my way backwards or forwards from the previous numbered page until I found the correct number, then go to the glossary in the back, and then back to the page I was reading to figure out what was going on。 I understand that the decision not to include sound effects translations on the page had to do with maintaining the manga's artistic integrity, but I didn't feel that maintaining said integrity was worth the constant interruptions to the story。 I've read other mangas where they have kept the sound effect in the original Japanese, and simply provided a miniscule translation in parentheses underneath, and, personally, I prefer this method。Another, much more important note: why did Urasawa opt to give Tenma a haircut at the end? So sad。🡩 Actuall footage of me crying over Tenma's hair 🡩All jokes aside, though, "Monster" was a fantastic read, and I heartily recommend it to anyone looking for a good character driven psychological thriller。["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]> 。。。more
